Scabies is an infection caused by a microscopic parasite, the Sarcoptes. Here the female digs tunnels into the skin and deposits her eggs, this causes severe itching.
The infection spreads rapidly through physical contact between people living together. It is not dangerous, and is treated with lotions applied to the skin.
The first recorded account of this parasite was in the 17th century.
