Napoleon is one of the most famous French leaders, inspiring both admiration and revulsion.
Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Corsica in 1769. A talented and ambitious general during the French Revolution, he took power in a coup in 1799. He proclaims himself emperor in 1804. He reorganized the French army and conquered a large part of Europe : Italy, Austria, Prussia, Switzerland, Poland, Span and installs his family as heads of the conquered countries. He then attempts to invade Russia which turns into a giant disaster. His army of 600,000 soldiers is decimated during the winter. An alliance of European kings, led by Britain, then conspire against him. After a suicide attempt, Napoleon was exiled to the island of Elba in 1914. Barely a year later, Napoleon lands in the south of France and is back in Paris 20 days later. He is defeated for good at Waterloo in June 1815 and is finally exiled to the island of Saint Helena where he died in 1821. He left France in ruins but he also reformed many of its institutions.
