The human immunodeficiency virus or HIV, attacks the immune system of humans. After a few years it leads to the disease AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), where the state of the patients immune system is extremely weakened.
HIV is transmitted through blood and sexual secretions.
AIDS emerged in the early 1980s, and the virus was first identified in 1983. The epidemic has since about 30 million deaths, mainly in Africa. Today, antiretroviral (ARV) can delay the onset of the disease, but there is still no vaccine against HIV.
